The Enchanting Beauty of Istanbul’s Underground Architecture
When I, photographer Ngọc Trần, set foot in Istanbul, I couldn’t hide my astonishment at the city’s grand and unique architectural heritage. It’s almost unbelievable how just a few steps can take you from ancient Roman relics to the magnificent structures of the Ottoman era. Among all the breathtaking sites, one that left a lasting impression on me was the Basilica Cistern—a magnificent underground water reservoir hidden beneath the city.
Basilica Cistern – A Masterpiece of Underground Architecture
Deep beneath the surface, the Basilica Cistern was built during the Roman Empire in the 6th century. This colossal structure features more than 336 marble columns supporting its vaulted ceiling. But what struck me the most was the ethereal play of light reflecting off the water onto the columns. The scene felt like stepping into another world—a serene, mysterious beauty that made me feel as if I had wandered into a fairy tale.
Experiencing Architecture Through the Lens
As a photographer with a passion for architectural photography, I spent hours exploring the depths of the cistern, searching for the perfect angles to capture the harmonious blend of architecture and light. Every column and detail carries the marks of history, and my goal was to convey those stories through my photographs. My book, Istanbul: The Lifestyle and the Food, invites you to discover not just the city’s culinary delights but also the richness of its architectural heritage, illustrated through the photos I painstakingly captured.
Ngọc Trần – A Storyteller Through the lens
To me, each photograph is more than just a snapshot—it’s a way to tell a story. The Basilica Cistern is not just a historical relic; it’s a symbol of creativity and engineering that has stood the test of time. Through my lens, you’ll see the grandeur and hidden beauty of Istanbul—a city where architecture and history coexist harmoniously. With my passion for architectural photography, I hope to bring you fresh perspectives on this extraordinary city.
