BRING CULTURE & CUISINE OF HANOI TO A BOOK
BRING CULTURE & CUISINE OF HANOI TO A BOOK
Hanoi, Vietnam will be, IS OR HAS BEEN YOUR DESTINATION, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU.
WORLDWIDE
IN VIETNAM
INTRODUCTION
Wandering the streets of Hanoi and seeing the city through the eyes of photographer Ngoc Tran, the city’s veil is lifted. In this dreamily conveyed, casually told and yet deeply informative narrative, we are drawn deep into the Hanoian world of streetside tables, cluttered windows and yellow-hued walls with their criss- cross shadows as if we are taking a well- trodden pathway home. In no hurry, we wander transfixed across the town through its side streets, watching everything we see with warm recognition, all courtesy of our guide’s authoritative and confident insider’s knowledge.
Ngoc’s Hanoi is a quiet world, but it is one full of people. As we stroll from street to street at random, stopping to focus on easy-to-miss details with almost poetic understanding, we always find ourselves right among the common people, those who carry the air of sadness that all strangers share, yet robed here in the familiarity we usually reserve for kin. Through Ngoc’s lens, their unseen lives come into full, richly rendered view, their mysteries communicated with simple clarity.
This photo book brings the culture and cuisine of Hanoi into high resolution without losing readers in inauthentic structures. A recipe here, a storefront there, a perfectly- created dish, the view from a doorway—all laid out as they are found in the real world, one after the other, resisting form and sequence. In this book, Ngoc affectionately passes over a handful of memories, inspirations and poignant insights; they are now ours to enjoy too, a vision of this extraordinary city, intimately shared.
Join Ngoc Tran in this stroll through Hanoi, and don’t forget to smile at all the folks you’ll meet on the streets. They’ll be welcoming you home.

OVERVIEW
OVERVIEW
FRIED RAGWORM CAKES
.... My childhood memories are filled with rainy afternoons after school, where I came home to the smell of frying worm patties. The happiness of my childhood was successfully sneaking a patty when mom wasn’t looking and running away.
TRADITIONAL FAMILY MEAL STYLE
A traditional home meal consists of a soup, a main dish, and a side dish such as pickled vegetables. It needs to comprise of savory, sour, and fresh flavors in a harmonious mix. The men of the family can enjoy a glass of traditional rice wine before a meal.
BLACK TEETH A BEAUTY TREND
Love first for the ponytail - Love so for elocutionary charm - Love then for the beauty spots -Love more for the sparkling dark ever teeth. This was the portrait of the Vietnamese dream girl in the past. Now all of them have become grandmothers and great grandmothers. To have a set of fashionable black teeth, each region has different methods of staining.
OLD BUILDING
When I was 17, first fell in love with a guy who lived in one of these window, but unfortunately for me, he didn't reciprocate my feelings. Because of this, I cried for many days of my youth. Years passed, one day I passed the that guy's residence again, looking up at these windows with a camera in hand.
At that moment, my emotions led me to find a mysterious way with my own angle, the angle that showed me the life inside windows, where many of my friends' childhoods reside. Followed by happy working days here, let today's emotions be written into pictures and words in your hand in this book Hanoi the Lifestyle & the Food.

REVIEW
Hanoi: The Lifestyle & The Food is a breathtaking look beneath the skin of Vietnam’s sometimes misunderstood - and often underrated - capital city, told through a lens with love and affection. Ngoc Tran’s superb new book eschews the picture-postcard style of many photographers, preferring instead a more intimate look at life, culture and food. Each page of this book is a rich tribute to Hanoians and their city, and a resounding endorsement of the old adage that every picture speaks a thousand words. The photos are supported by perceptive anecdotes drawn from Ngoc’s memories occasionally prompting the reader to laugh out loud. Beautifully styled food photography of popular local dishes juxtaposed with images of the lives of those who create the food - and those who enjoy it - add an authentic and reverent vision of a culture that has captured the hearts of many visitors, including, famously, former US President Barack Obama and CNN food guru, the late Anthony Bourdain. Through Ngoc’s passion for both food and her camera, the reader is presented with a truly unique introduction to the lives of Hanoians, presented in an uncomplicated blend of warmth, sentimentality and respect. By the time you reach the last page, you’ll be itching to pack your bags and book a ticket to Hanoi - and eager to get your eyes on Ngoc’s next book, which will focus on Saigon.

Hanoi can be both incredibly charming and infuriatingly chaotic. While most visitors only experience a sliver of what this ancient capital has to offer outside of its well-traveled, “must-see” sights, Ngoc has a wonderful talent for peeling away the obvious and introducing her readers to what makes Hanoi a wonderful place to not just visit, but to actually live. Even if you’ve been to Hanoi many times before, Ngoc’s latest book will have you falling in love with the city all over again through her beautiful images tinged with nostalgic memories and local insight.

The photobook of Ngoc Tran - Hanoi, the lifestyle & food. What a fantastic discovery for all Vietnam and food lovers from around the world. Having traveled through Vietnam, I fell in love with the friendly people, the layer back vibe, the tranquility in the chaos and especially the richness and freshness of their food. Oh, the food.... What an amazing experience it was. In Ngoc’s photobook I have found familiar places and such good shots of the delicacies served in Hanoi, just seeing these photos, I closed my eyes and could almost smell and remember the taste. Throughout the book I read the interesting stories of people and their daily routines, a glimpse into their culture and traditions, very well written. I can highly recommend taking time and escape into the beautiful pictures and stories.

Hoa Duong Hanoian
It is less a book on cuisine and more a love letter to the people, culture, and food of Hanoi. This book is very clearly a labour of love and a superb starting point for all of those who wish to get to know the beautiful, timeless Hanoi beyond skin deep.
