With their complex, multifaceted blend of the familiar and the strange, the world’s great cities are exhilarating destinations for any curious traveller. Of course, what counts as familiar to any given visitor from abroad depends on their point of origin, and every account of a foreign city will always pass through the lens of a wandering soul with their own personal perspective, tinted by all the cultural background and experiences they bring along with them.
Although its modern profile is far more hushed and humble than that of its glorious past, Istanbul has enjoyed a time as the greatest city in the world, and its former heyday can still be sensed in its metropolitan culture, its historical architectures and the living antiquity of its cuisine. For Istanbul to be memorialised by foodie traveller Ngoc Tran – who bears the frenzied bustle and vibrant flavours of Vietnam with her wherever she goes – is to invite contrasts and comparisons between both exotic destinations, revealing new poetries in counterpoint between Far and Middle East; between Asia and Europe. As a destination that straddles both continents, Istanbul is the ideal ground zero for Ngoc’s Vietnamese take on this corner of the world, bringing readers a fresh interpretation of the ancient Ottoman capital.
In briefly claiming Istanbul as her new home, Ngoc paints an exciting portrait of the city that celebrates her unique cultural perspective. To Ngoc, the astonishing beauty of Istanbul’s old structures are a privilege to behold, but she cannot come to these wonders without first strolling the mazework of its suburban streets – where she immediately notes the manifest respect that Istanbulites hold for their animals; cats, dogs and birdlife roaming wild, free and healthy under the concerted care and protection of the city’s inhabitants.
Ngoc can’t help but stop to photograph the colourful entrances to countless private homes, just as she has in her previous photo essays for Hanoi and Saigon – creating montages familiar to those who know her work, while capturing all the subtleties and beauty of this unique corner of Turkey in their own essence. Of course, it doesn’t take long before Ngoc turns to food, and she cannot disguise her delight as she discovers serving after serving of Istanbul’s everyday delicacies. Ngoc’s skill in capturing the subtleties of flavour through her descriptions of each dish are matched only by the mastery of her camera in preserving their delicious colours on the page. With Ngoc, we discover popular Middle Eastern favourites as well as distinctive treats unique to this city; in each local variant we can almost taste gusts of spice and sauce that hearken to other faraway places, many of which seem to echo the staples of Vietnam.
The ultimate test of a travel book is whether a reader puts it down yearning to visit this destination for themselves. Those who’ve journeyed with Ngoc Tran across the pages of Istanbul the Lifestyle & the Food will not only dream of walking its streets, they’ll feel as if they’ve done so already. In sharing a special Vietnamese vision of this extraordinary city, readers will have seen something of Turkey that only Ngoc could have revealed to them.
Welcome all newcomers to Ngoc Tran’s Istanbul – you’ll come to share in the photographer’s passion for the city along the journey. Enjoy the sights, the tastes, and the wonders herein.

In this book…
As the Turkish proverb goes, “A conversation without tea is like a night without the moon.” In Turkey, tea is more than just a drink; it’s a cultural ritual that reflects respect and hospitality. When guests arrive, tea is served generously, a gesture of warmth and welcome. Sharing a cup of tea is a time for connection, for exchanging stories and building relationships. If you’re offered tea, take the time to sit down and enjoy a conversation with your gracious host. And remember, it’s considered impolite to decline a cup.
Each cake is a masterpiece, and the bakers are the skilled artists behind them. In the cozy atmosphere of a bakery on the Asian side of Istanbul, the sweet aroma of baked goods fills the air. Here, bakers with deft hands meticulously craft their culinary creations. For them, baking is not merely a profession but a passionate art. Every cake reflects the dedication and creativity of its maker. While they honor traditional recipes, they continuously explore and innovate to create unique and delightful flavors.

In a modest shop tucked away on a street in Kadıköy, Istanbul, amidst a vibrant world of glass jars filled with colorful vegetables, stands Ali Reza, a 62-year-old man, diligently arranging jars of Turşu. He’s been making traditional pickles since he was a boy, and he says, “Turşu is an essential part of Turkish cuisine”. Turşu is made from a variety of vegetables such as carrots, cucumbers, radishes, bell peppers, cabbage, cauliflower, and even fruits like grapes, peaches, plums, and tangerines, all soaked in a mixture of brine, vinegar, garlic, chili, and herbs. Depending on personal preference and family recipes, special spices may be added to create a distinct taste that is tangy, salty, and delightfully crunchy.
